Freight Train Derails in City of Industry, Packages Spill Across Tracks

A freight train derailed in the City of Industry early Thursday morning, spilling packages across the tracks and triggering a large cleanup effort.

The incident happened around 7:20 p.m. at the Union Pacific rail yard on the 1700 block of Arenth Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Crews were initially called for reports of downed electrical wires, but upon arrival found multiple rail cars had derailed, toppling power poles in the process.

Fifteen cars went off the tracks, though officials confirmed no passenger cars were involved. One car appeared to have split open during the derailment, scattering packages across the ground.

Hazardous materials teams were called to the site as a precaution, but officials said no spills were detected. No injuries were reported.

“Cleanup is underway and the incident is under investigation,” a Union Pacific spokesperson said in a statement.

Aerial footage from SkyCal showed cars lying on their sides just off the tracks, with debris surrounding the damaged rail cars. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
