Developing: Two Big Rigs Erupt in Flames at Thousand Palms Flying J Travel Center
A developing story tonight out of Thousand Palms, where two big rigs were engulfed in flames at the Flying J Travel Center Thursday afternoon.
NBC Palm Springs’ Brett Rosen was live on scene, where Cal Fire confirmed no injuries were reported in the massive blaze. The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m., sending thick plumes of smoke into the air as dozens of firefighters rushed to the area on Varner Road.
Crews worked swiftly to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to the nearby gas station store. Excavators could be seen clearing burned debris late into the evening as investigators continued to assess the scene.
One of the trucks was reportedly carrying clothing, while the other transported flowers. According to Cal Fire, the fire was contained within an hour.
Leanne Osuna, a new Flying J employee, described her first day on the job as unforgettable. “It’s my first day, so I thought he was messing with me when he said, ‘Leanne, call 911 — there’s a truck on fire,’” she said. “There were a bunch of explosions — very scary, not what I expected my first day.”
Julio Contino, the driver of one of the semis, expressed gratitude that everyone made it out safely. “It feels a little traumatic that we lost some material possessions, but it’s only material possessions,” he said. “We’re thankful to God that we are safe and sound.”
In a statement, Pilot Company thanked first responders for their quick action and confirmed that no one was harmed. Cal Fire says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
