New Medicare Price Cuts Could Lower Costs for Some Popular Drugs, But Out-of-Pocket Savings Are Mixed

A new round of Medicare drug price negotiations has resulted in lower prices for 15 high-cost medications, including popular diabetes and weight-loss treatments Ozempic and Wegovy. These lower prices are scheduled to take effect in 2027 and are projected to save Medicare up to $12 billion by reducing what the program pays for these medications.

Other drugs on the negotiated list include treatments for cancer, depression, and neurological diseases. The move is part of a broader effort to reduce the government’s overall spending on prescription medications for older Americans.

While the savings for Medicare are expected to be significant, exactly how much patients will save at the pharmacy counter is still unclear. Individuals’ out-of-pocket costs depend on their specific Medicare drug plans and yearly medication needs. Additionally, Medicare drug spending will soon be capped, limiting annual out-of-pocket expenses to about $2,200 — a change that could help seniors avoid large medical bills.

Officials say these price reductions represent progress toward making essential medications more affordable and accessible, especially as demand grows for high-cost drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy.
