Broadcast Legend Vikki Vargas Reflects on 40 Years in News and Mentors NBC Palm Springs Journalists

In this week’s Off Air conversation on NBC Palm Springs, reporter Brett Rosen sits down with veteran journalist Vikki Vargas, known to many as the “Queen of OC” from her decades with NBC in Los Angeles. Vargas has spent more than 40 years in the television news business, including time reporting in the Coachella Valley. Now she’s focused on guiding the next generation of storytellers as a coach and mentor in the newsroom.

Vargas says the biggest shift she has witnessed is the evolution of technology. From bulky broadcast cameras and tape decks to small digital gear and now full reporting done with cell phones, every decade has brought a new form of storytelling. But even with these tools, she says the future comes with challenges. With the industry shrinking, journalists are being asked to do more with fewer resources. Still, she sees the business as evolving rather than disappearing.

She also notes social media has transformed news priorities. When she left full-time reporting three years ago, stations were already pushing digital-first strategies, telling journalists that online content could be more important than what airs on TV. That marked a dramatic shift for a career rooted in traditional broadcasting.

When asked what she notices most about today’s emerging reporters, Vargas points to experience. She says that while she can teach writing, editing, and creative storytelling, the emotional perspective gained from covering major events over a lifetime cannot be rushed. “You’re going to have to experience all of these stories,” she says, explaining that both the difficult and uplifting assignments shape a journalist’s voice.

Even with the accessibility of mobile reporting, she admits credibility can be harder to establish with just a phone in hand. In earlier years, a large camera signaled authority at press conferences. Now, reporters must assert their professionalism without relying on equipment to speak for them.

Despite the changes, Vargas says she is energized by her new chapter, finding joy in helping others grow on-air and behind the scenes. “I’m so enjoying sharing that knowledge with all of you,” she tells Rosen. “That’s been a kick.”
