Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins Opens at Revolution Stage Company in Palm Springs

Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins is coming to the stage in Palm Springs, with Revolution Stage Company taking on one of musical theater’s most challenging and thought-provoking productions.

The show explores the lives and motivations of individuals who attempted or succeeded in assassinating U.S. presidents throughout American history. Known for its dark humor and controversial subject matter, Assassins is rarely staged, making this production a notable moment for local theater audiences.

Appearing in the show are Imani DeLeon, who plays the Balladeer, and Anthony Nannini, who portrays John Wilkes Booth. DeLeon’s casting is especially unique, as the Balladeer was originally written for a male tenor. She says adapting the role to her vocal range while preserving its emotional depth has been a rewarding challenge. The Balladeer serves as the show’s narrator, guiding audiences through the story while offering insight into the humanity of the characters.

Nannini says Revolution Stage Company is known for taking creative risks, and Assassins reflects that mission. The production aims to connect historical events with modern conversations about ambition, disillusionment, and identity in America.

Assassins opens Friday, the 16th, and runs through the 31st at Revolution Stage Company in Palm Springs. Tickets and additional information are available through the theater’s website.

Both performers will continue working with the company in its upcoming production of Pippin, rehearsing one show while performing another.

Outside the theater, DeLeon also works as a third-grade teacher with Palm Springs Unified School District, balancing her full-time teaching career with her passion for performing.
