North Korean Defectors Aim for Global K-Pop Success With New Boy Band 1VERSE

Two young men who once risked their lives escaping North Korea are now chasing a very different dream: global K-pop stardom.

Seok and Hyuk, both 25, are members of 1VERSE, a newly debuted five-member K-pop boy band whose journey stands apart in an industry known for carefully polished origin stories. The two are North Korean defectors who resettled in South Korea after fleeing the authoritarian regime of Kim Jong Un as teenagers.

Their paths eventually led them to Seoul, where they were discovered in 2022 by Singing Beetle, a boutique music label aiming to introduce a globally diverse K-pop group. Alongside bandmates from Japan and the United States, Seok and Hyuk trained for more than two years in singing, dancing, language study, and performance before officially debuting this month.

For Seok, music was an early refuge. Even in North Korea, he quietly wrote song lyrics about longing and family. Hyuk’s interest developed later, sparked by a South Korean teacher who encouraged him to try rapping after noticing him writing lyrics in class. That encouragement ultimately shifted his future.

Their debut album includes songs shaped by perseverance, uncertainty, and hope, themes that resonate beyond their personal histories. While their pasts inevitably draw attention, both artists say they want to be known first as musicians, not simply as defectors.

The group is now preparing for its first international showcase in the United States, a bold step in a fiercely competitive global market dominated by major K-pop agencies. Industry analysts say their unique background may attract early attention, but long-term success will depend on music, storytelling, and fan connection.

So far, 1VERSE has built a growing following online, amassing millions of likes on TikTok and engaging fans through social media and a dedicated platform. For Seok and Hyuk, each interaction reinforces the idea that their story can inspire others to dream beyond limitations.

As they prepare to take the American stage, the two acknowledge the uncertainty ahead. Still, their journey from isolation to international possibility reflects a rare convergence of survival and ambition — and a new voice within the global K-pop movement.
