CNN Poll: Democrats Show Strong Midterm Motivation Despite Low Approval of Party Leaders

Democratic voters appear highly energized ahead of this fall’s midterm elections, even as many hold negative views of their party’s leadership in Congress, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

The survey finds Democrats with a five-point edge over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot among registered voters. That advantage grows significantly among voters who describe themselves as deeply motivated to vote, where Democrats lead by 16 points. The generic ballot is often viewed as an early indicator of national political momentum, measuring which party voters prefer regardless of specific candidates.

The poll suggests Democrats may be poised to capitalize on dissatisfaction with Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled government in Washington. A majority of Americans surveyed said they view the first year of Trump’s second term as a failure, with particularly low approval among independent voters.

Despite that motivation, Democratic voters are sharply critical of their own leaders. Approval for congressional Democratic leadership stands at 28%, lower than approval for Republican leaders. Large majorities of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say their party in Congress has not done enough to oppose Trump or Republican policies, and many feel unrepresented by the current government.

That dissatisfaction is especially strong among the most motivated Democratic voters, who are more likely to say party leaders have been ineffective. Analysts say this could fuel primary challenges against incumbent Democrats in the months ahead.

Public sentiment overall remains pessimistic, with most Americans describing the economy as poor. Among those voters, calls for a change in political leadership are just as popular as demands for lower inflation.

Republican voters, by contrast, largely approve of their party’s leadership in Congress, with about three-quarters expressing support. Within the GOP, most voters believe Republicans are striking the right balance in supporting Trump, and a strong majority say he has had a positive effect on the party.

Independents remain skeptical of both parties’ leaders, but many still lean toward Democrats on the generic ballot, suggesting a willingness to back change even without strong confidence in Democratic leadership.
