Tony Goldwyn Embraces His Reputation as Hollywood’s Suave Villain

Tony Goldwyn may be known for portraying some of Hollywood’s most polished villains, but the actor says he’s perfectly at ease with that reputation.

Goldwyn stars in the new film One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, where he plays Virgil Throckmorton, the charismatic leader of a covert white supremacist group. The film has generated significant awards-season attention, including multiple Golden Globe wins, and is being talked about as a major Oscar contender.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Goldwyn has built a niche playing morally unsettling characters who often appear charming on the surface. His breakout role as Carl Bruner in the 1990 hit Ghost helped set that trajectory, followed by memorable performances in films such as The Pelican Brief, Kiss the Girls, and The Last Samurai. On television, he became widely recognized as Fitz Grant on Scandal, a role that blurred the line between hero and villain.

Goldwyn says what draws him to these roles is the challenge of finding humanity in characters who ultimately lack a moral compass. In One Battle After Another, he describes his character as especially frightening because of his absolute certainty about what he believes is right and wrong.

Beyond acting, Goldwyn has expanded his career behind the camera, directing episodes of Scandal and other series, as well as films including A Walk on the Moon and the more recent Ezra. He currently appears in the Law & Order universe and the HBO series Hacks.

The actor has also addressed conversations around being part of a famous Hollywood family, as the grandson of legendary producer Samuel Goldwyn. While he acknowledges the privilege of his background, Goldwyn says he ultimately had to make peace with his own path and build a career that wasn’t defined solely by his last name.

Goldwyn recently launched a podcast with his daughter exploring family legacies in professional fields, further reflecting on how generational careers can shape identity, opportunity, and responsibility.
