Two Men Arrested in Palm Desert Burglary Involving Unserialized Firearms

Two men are in custody following an investigation into a burglary that led to the recovery of unserialized firearms, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies identified the suspects as Johnny Schoonover, a resident of Banning, and Joshua Wittes, a resident of Beaumont. Authorities say both men were arrested in connection with the theft and possession of firearms that did not have serial numbers.

The investigation began on December 22 after the Sheriff’s Department received a report of a burglary in the area of Joni Drive in Palm Desert. Investigators say multiple items were stolen during the burglary, including firearms.

Following the report, detectives tracked the suspects to locations in Beaumont and Banning. On Tuesday, deputies served search warrants, leading to the arrests and the seizure of the unserialized firearms, often referred to as ghost guns.

Officials say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as the case is reviewed by prosecutors. Anyone with information related to the burglary or the suspects is encouraged to contact the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
