Fraude por desempleo alcanza al menos $20 mil millones en California
California ha pagado al menos $20,000 millones en beneficios de desempleo fraudulentos desde el comienzo de la pandemia, una cifra menor de lo que se tenía originalmente, pero que aún representa más del 11% del total de beneficios pagados desde el inicio de la pandemia.
La directora del Departamento de Desarrollo del Empleo (EDD, por sus siglas en inglés) Rita Sáenz, confirmó el número a los legisladores estatales durante una audiencia de supervisión el lunes.
Los funcionarios estatales culparon de casi todo ese fraude a una expansión de los beneficios de desempleo aprobada apresuradamente por el Congreso que permitió a las personas que trabajaban por cuenta propia obtener cheques semanales del gobierno con pocas garantías para evitar que las personas que no eran elegibles para recibirlos recibieran beneficios.
“No creo que la gente haya captado en su mente la enormidad de la cantidad de dinero que se ha emitido de forma errática a personas que no lo merecen”, dijo el asambleísta Tom Lackey, un republicano de Palmdale, quien trajo una ilustración de 29 camiones de volteo llenos a la rebosar con billetes de $100 que representan un poco más de la mitad de ese dinero perdido por fraude.
La pandemia marcó el comienzo de un fraude generalizado en las agencias de desempleo en todo el país, con al menos $87 mil millones en pagos fraudulentos aprobados por los estados, según un informe de junio de la oficina del inspector general del Departamento de Trabajo de Estados Unidos.
En California, el fraude fue tan generalizado que los funcionarios estatales aprobaron al menos $810 millones en beneficios a nombre de personas que estaban en prisión, incluidos docenas de asesinos infames en el corredor de la muerte. Los funcionarios estatales incluso enviaron $21,000 en beneficios a una dirección en Roseville con el nombre y número de Seguro Social de la senadora estadounidense Dianne Feinstein, algunos de los $2 millones en pagos fraudulentos totales que se enviaron a esa misma dirección.
Pero la administración del gobernador Gavin Newsom buscó el lunes asegurar a los legisladores estatales que la tubería de fraude en California se había cerrado. De acuerdo a Rita Sáenz, el estado ha implementado un nuevo software de verificación de identidad que, junto con otras medidas preventivas, ha detenido un estimado de $120 mil millones en intentos de fraude.
