Propietarios de armas de asalto en California enfrentan nueva fecha límite de registro
Empezando este jueves, los propietarios de armas en California tendrán una segunda oportunidad de registrar y quedarse con un arma que sea considerada ilegal bajo la nueva y expandida definición de un arma de asalto por parte del estado.
El periodo de registro es para aquellos que compraron legalmente un arma de asalto de tipo “bullet button”, que permiten al usuario intercambiar rápidamente cartuchos de munición al utilizar una pequeña herramienta o la punta de una bala.
Los legisladores de California prohibieron las armas con este aditamento en 2016, pero quienes las adquirieron antes de que la ley entrara en efecto el 1 de enero de 2017, tienen permitido mantenerlas en su poder si las registran ante el estado.

Es la segunda ocasión que el gobierno abre un periodo de registro, luego de que los críticos dijeran que la estrategia no había sido la adecuada en su primer intento durante 2018, ya que el sitio web para registrarse presentó varios problemas y se cayó mientras cientos de usuarios intentaban registrar sus armas a través de diferentes exploradores web, equipos de computo y dispositivos con acceso a internet.
La oficina del fiscal estatal acordó, luego de una demanda realizada en marzo, que reabriría el plazo de registro nuevamente y que no castigaría a quienes no se hubieran registrado previo al 1 de julio de 2018, la fecha límite original.
Un abogado que representa a los dueños de armas, George M. Lee, dijo que estima que decenas de miles de dueños de armas se registren en esta segunda vuelta.
El nuevo periodo de registro inicia el jueves 13 de enero a las 9 a.m. y terminará el próximo 12 de abril a las 9 a.m.
Los dueños de este tipo de armas deberán declarar bajo juramento y con la posibilidad de cometer perjurio, que intentaron registrar su arma antes de la fecha límite original en 2018, pero no pudieron hacerlo debido a las dificultades técnicas en el sitio web.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
