Declaran emergencia local de salud en Chula Vista por acumulación de basura
La gestora municipal de la ciudad de Chula Vista, Maria Kachadoorian, declaró una emergencia de salud local luego de que los contenedores de basura a lo largo de la comunidad se encuentran a punto de desbordarse con desechos, ya que los trabajadores de sanidad siguen en huelga.
El paro de labores empezó el mes pasado, cuando más de 250 integrantes del sindicato de manejo de residuos de Republic Services demandaron mejores condiciones de seguridad laboral, mayores prestaciones y un aumento salarial.
Las negociaciones no han llegado a buen puerto y han fallado en llegar a un acuerdo aceptable para los empleados, por lo que las reuniones continúan para poder llegar a una resolución favorable.

En una declaración, Maria Kachadoorian dijo que la ciudad está al tanto de de las numerosas problemáticas derivadas de esta huelga, incluyendo que los deshechos orgánicos y los reciclables estén siendo tratados como basura y combinados por igual, mientras aumentan las infestaciones de plagas y más de 1,000 contenedores continúan al tope de su capacidad en los parques públicos de la ciudad.
También informó que desde el 20 de diciembre han recibido 526 correos electrónicos y más de 400 llamadas telefónicas en las que se reportan los contenedores de residuos llenos.
La declaratoria de emergencia entró en vigor a las 5 p.m. del miércoles y necesitará ser ratificada la próxima semana por el Consejo de la Ciudad de Chula Vista, una vez que eso suceda, se espera que se mantenga en efecto hasta el 18 de febrero, a menos que decida ser prolongada o cancelada antes de esa fecha, de acuerdo con Kachadoorian.
Pero esta declaración llega apenas un día después de la tensa reunión de consejo donde líderes locales presionaron a Republic para que solucione la huelga.
“Están regateando con ellos por centavos en las negociaciones. Sus obligaciones contractuales no están siendo cumplidas. ¿Cómo es eso un problema de la ciudad?”, dijo el concejal Stephen Padilla.
Uno de los empleados en huelga, Ricardo Gonzalez, le dijo a los medios la semana pasada que solo lucha junto a sus compañeros por una mejor calidad de vida.
“Es muy abrumador porque tengo una hija recién nacida, tiene dos meses, pero es un sacrificio no solo por mi, sino un sacrificio por los que estarán trabajando más adelante, es por el futuro, no solo por nosotros”, afirmó.

Este fin de semana se reanudaron los servicios de recolección de basura en algunas partes de la comunidad, en gran medida gracias a que Republic habilitó sus cuadrillas de empleados de reemplazo.
Sin embargo la alcaldesa de Chula Vista, Mary Casillas Salas, reconocío que llevará tiempo el poder atender a la totalidad de la población.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders.
