PSUSD Music Teacher Inspires Students Through Positivity and Passion
PSUSD Music Teacher Inspires Students Through Positivity and Passion The Palm Springs Unified School District is kicking off its new series, PSUSD Inspires, with a story that will strike a chord in your heart. Each month, the district will highlight a staff or student member making a meaningful impact in the community. For its inaugural feature, the spotlight shines on Michael Fergon, a music teacher at Vista Del Monte Elementary School, who’s transforming lives through the power of music. Known affectionately as the “Music Maestro,” Fergon’s teaching style blends positivity, creativity, and fun. He uses a token reward system to keep students engaged and encourages their creativity while fostering a love for music. His goal is simple: to make students excited about coming to music class. “I just lean on the positive because, for me, that’s the way to go—and it works really well,” Fergon shared. Fellow teachers at Vista Del Monte Elementary have taken notice of his uplifting approach. “Mr. Fergon is an amazing music teacher. He exudes inspiration, and his students love to perform in music class,” one colleague noted. Fergon’s journey to becoming a beloved music teacher began with dreams of being a rock star, inspired by his idol, Keith Green. While his path took a different turn, it led him to education, where he found his true calling. “In my students’ eyes, sometimes they say I’m a rock star,” Fergon said. “For me, I’d rather be home, right here locally, instead of traveling all over the place. I’m fine with what I’m doing right now. I consider myself a rock star with my students.” Fergon’s passion for music goes beyond teaching notes and melodies. For him, it’s about spreading the joy music brings. “Music makes me feel good, so I want to make them feel good as well,” he explained. “Whenever I have down days, I remind myself to stay positive, stay focused, and keep working because I believe hard work always pays off.” Fergon’s story is a testament to the power of positivity and passion in building a legacy that inspires others.
