Caltrans Crews Work Through Christmas Eve to Keep Sierra Passes Clear for Holiday Travelers
While many were settling in for Christmas Eve celebrations, Caltrans crews were hard at work throughout the night, clearing snow-covered Sierra passes to ensure safe holiday travel. The Christmas Eve storm brought significant snowfall to Northern California's mountain regions, creating both festive conditions and potential travel challenges.
The dedication of Caltrans workers paid off as visitors, including international tourists like the Wong family from Australia, were able to safely experience a white Christmas in the Sierra. "The only white we have in our Christmas is at the beach, so to have a white snow Christmas is pretty magical for us," shared one member of the Wong family, who praised the well-maintained road conditions.
Caltrans crews maintained continuous plowing operations until the snowfall subsided, managing what they described as "hard and fast" precipitation during one of their busiest times of the year. By Christmas Day, their focus shifted to clearing maintenance facilities, including the yard at Eco Summit, in preparation for expected additional snowfall.
The agency's commitment to keeping Highway 50 open and safe exemplifies their dedication to public service, particularly during the holiday season. Their efforts not only facilitated safe travel but also enabled countless families to create cherished Christmas memories in the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains.
