DSUSD Eighth Grader Leads First-Ever Black History Event at John Glenn Middle School

In a groundbreaking effort to bring more Black history education to her school, eighth grader Eden Alston of John Glenn Middle School, spearheaded the first-ever student-led Black History Month event on campus. After moving from Houston, Texas, two years ago, Eden quickly noticed a lack of events tailored to African American students and felt compelled to make a change.

Her initiative started with a simple email explaining her vision: to challenge stereotypes and highlight the rich contributions of Black Americans in history and in her own community. With the backing of her principal, her mother, and several local leaders, Eden spent a year planning an interactive educational event that featured student-made exhibits and a panel discussion with notable African American professionals from the area.

The event was not only a success but also a catalyst for continued efforts in making cultural education a permanent part of the school’s curriculum.

Principal Todd Biggert praised Eden’s leadership, noting that her efforts have encouraged the school to integrate Black history into daily announcements, college spotlights, and literature selections for National Black History Month. As for Eden, she is already looking ahead—her next goal is to establish a Black Student Union, to continue promoting awareness and inclusivity.
