Trader Joe's Implements Egg Purchase Limits Amid Avian Flu-Driven Shortage

Due to the severe impact of the avian flu on the egg supply chain, Trader Joe's has enacted a rationing policy for eggs, limiting customers to purchasing only one dozen eggs per day. This decision comes as a direct response to the flu outbreak, which resulted in the deaths of over 40 million egg-laying chickens in 2024, significantly reducing the availability of eggs.

A spokesperson for Trader Joe's explained that the rationing measure is designed to help stores avoid running out of stock and to ensure fair access to eggs for all customers. The shortage has caused egg prices to rise, and some shoppers have attempted to buy large quantities of eggs, exacerbating the issue.

Trader Joe's is not the only company grappling with the egg supply shortage. Kroger, another major retailer, has yet to enforce an official egg purchase limit but has implemented limits in some stores depending on egg availability. Similarly, Waffle House has raised the price of meals that include eggs by 50 cents, reflecting the increased cost of eggs in the market.

The situation is expected to worsen, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicting that egg prices will increase by as much as 20% before the end of the year. These measures across various retailers highlight the far-reaching effects of the avian flu on the egg industry and the broader food supply chain.
