National Cancer Prevention Month

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, claiming about one in five lives lost to cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. In recognition of National Cancer Prevention Month, Eisenhower Health is working to raise awareness about lung cancer screening and the cutting-edge medical techniques used to treat it. Timothy Duffy, a longtime railroad worker, shared his inspiring story of lung cancer recovery. Although Duffy smoked for 25 years and quit decades ago, he had no symptoms and was shocked to learn of his diagnosis after a screening at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage.

"I was full of fear," Duffy recalled, describing his initial reaction to the diagnosis. However, after being referred to Dr. Justin Thomas, the medical director of Eisenhower's Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Clinic, Duffy's journey took a positive turn. Dr. Thomas emphasizes that individuals between the ages of 50 to 80 with a smoking history, or a strong family history of lung cancer, should get screened to catch potential issues early.

Thanks to Eisenhower Health's groundbreaking medical advancements, including SEOS technology, Duffy underwent a successful procedure to remove part of his lung. Today, he is cancer-free and hopes his story will encourage others to get screened. Early detection, as Duffy learned, can make all the difference.
