Real ID Deadline Nears: What Coachella Valley Travelers Need to Know
If you're planning to fly out of Palm Springs International Airport this summer, the time to check your ID is now. Beginning May 7, anyone 18 and older must present a REAL ID or other federally accepted identification to board domestic flights — and Coachella Valley travelers are being urged to prepare.
Lines are already stretching at DMV offices across the state as people rush to meet the deadline. Although Palm Springs and Indio offices have seen steady traffic, local experts warn the final weeks will bring even longer waits.
“We’re seeing what’s happening up north with hours-long lines, and we expect a similar crunch here,” said a spokesperson for the California DMV. “If you’re planning to fly this summer, don’t wait.”
According to the TSA, roughly one in five Americans still don’t have a REAL ID-compliant license. Those who show up at the airport without one after May 7 may be turned away at security checkpoints, even for short trips.
Coachella Valley residents can check their current license for a gold bear and star emblem, which indicates compliance. If your license doesn’t have it, you’ll need to visit a DMV office with required documentation, including proof of identity, Social Security number, and California residency.
Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are available — though potentially time-consuming. For those with passports, a REAL ID isn’t required for domestic flights, but many locals prefer the convenience of a compliant license.
Whether you're heading out for vacation or a quick business trip, don’t get caught unprepared. With the busy summer travel season around the corner, now is the time to get your REAL ID.
