Halley's Comet Sparks Meteor Shower Over Coachella Valley Tonight
Get ready for a dazzling show in the sky tonight. A large meteor shower—caused by debris from Halley's Comet—is expected to peak late tonight and continue into the early morning hours.
The annual event is part of the Eta Aquariid meteor shower, which occurs when Earth passes through the dusty trail left behind by Halley's Comet. While meteors will be visible through the end of the month, experts say the best viewing opportunity is tonight into tomorrow morning.
For local stargazers, the ideal place to watch the meteor shower is Joshua Tree National Park. Designated a “dark sky park” by the National Parks Conservation Association, it offers minimal light pollution and wide-open views of the night sky.
Viewers are encouraged to head out early, bring a blanket or reclining chair, and look toward the eastern sky away from city lights.
Clear skies and mild temperatures could make this one of the best nights to catch a glimpse of the cosmos in motion.
