International Limerick Day, Buddha Day, and More: Celebrate May 12 with Our Hashtag Holiday Calendar

The Hashtag Holiday Calendar on NBC Palm Springs, sponsored by Inland Empire Health Plan, kicked off the week with a playful look at the special observances for Monday, May 12, 2025.

First up is International Limerick Day, celebrated on the birthday of poet Edward Lear, born in 1812. Lear popularized the limerick form, known for its humorous five-line structure. Hosts even shared a limerick to mark the occasion.

Today is also Buddha Day, honoring the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. The holiday is observed on the full moon day of May in many cultures.

In addition, National Odometer Day marks the patent granted to William Clayton in 1847 for this now-essential car feature. While the hosts joked about reversing odometers like in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, they reminded viewers that modern technology won’t let that trick work.

Rounding out the list is National Nutty Fudge Day, celebrating the rich chocolate treat packed with crunchy nuts.

The fun continued with a nut-themed pop quiz. The first question asked what band inspired The Nutty Squirrels’ 1959 hit Uh-Oh, Part Two. The correct answer: The Chipmunks, known for their sped-up vocals.

The second question revisited Hollywood history, asking which actor starred in the 1963 version of The Nutty Professor. While Eddie Murphy starred in the 1996 remake, the original starred comedy legend Jerry Lewis.

After some friendly debate and laughter, the team congratulated the only participant to score 100% correct.
