Palm Desert High School Track Stars Head to CIF Finals, Carrying Desert Track Legacy

The NBC Palm Springs Sports Desk with Tim O’Brien, brought to you by Agua Caliente Casinos, spotlights a historic weekend for Palm Desert High School’s track and field program.

For the first time in recent memory, the Aztecs are sending two athletes to the CIF finals in running events, a feat unmatched by any other local desert school this season. NBC Palm Springs’ Caitlin Kelly visited the track to talk to the athletes and coaches driving this success.

Sophomore Jack Penny stunned the Desert Empire League this year, going from unknown to league champion. Originally focused on the 400-meter race, Penny unexpectedly qualified for the 300 hurdles as well. “My preparation going into DEL and CIF was primarily for the 400,” Penny said. “Now, I’m working on my hurdle form and strategy for the 300.”

Joining him at CIF is junior Nicholas Danglis, a two-time league champion in hurdles and a seasoned competitor. “I started my freshman year, and I just love the sport. It’s you against you out there, and it’s a lot of fun,” Danglis told Kelly.

Guiding these standout athletes is head coach Mark Monroy, who praised their dedication. “These are the two types of athletes we want: hardworking and coachable kids,” Monroy said.

Adding to the story is Palm Desert alum and sprints coach William Carr (Class of 2020), a former school record holder. This season, his younger brother Oliver Carr broke that same record, adding a layer of sibling rivalry and legacy to the program.

When asked who would win in a race today, William laughed, “Depends on the race, but I would most likely win the 100. Oliver might take the long distance.”

This mix of tradition, talent, and community pride has propelled Palm Desert High School into the spotlight. Jack Penny and Nick Danglis aren’t just running for themselves—they’re representing the entire Coachella Valley track community on the CIF stage.

NBC Palm Springs will have full results and a recap on Sunday.
