Business Jet Crashes in San Diego Neighborhood, Multiple Fatalities Reported
San Diego, CA – A business jet crashed into a residential neighborhood near Montgomery Executive Airport early Thursday morning, killing multiple people and igniting several homes in a community housing many military families.
The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. during foggy weather conditions. The aircraft, identified as a Cessna 550 Citation, had departed Teterboro Airport in New Jersey late Wednesday night, made a stop in Wichita, Kansas, and continued on to San Diego without issuing any emergency alerts before impact.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and destruction.
“We ran outside and saw just sparks flying up and tried to make sure everybody was ok,” one resident said.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl called the crash scene “horrific,” with jet fuel flooding the streets and multiple fires burning simultaneously.
San Diego Fire Assistant Chief Dan Eddy praised local residents for helping each other escape burning homes before emergency crews arrived.
“The military families did a phenomenal job,” Eddy said, highlighting the community’s quick action during the emergency.
Weather data confirmed low visibility and cloud cover at the time of the crash, but there was no indication of a mechanical failure or distress call from the cockpit.
The FAA and the NTSB are on the scene conducting a full investigation into the cause of the crash.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria expressed condolences and pledged support for those affected.
“They are part of a military community that makes up our city,” he said. “We will support them for as long as it takes to make sure that we get back to good here.”
