Growing Concerns Over Tactics Used in Immigration Arrests

A Coachella Valley resident, who requested to remain anonymous, says he now hesitates to answer the door for law enforcement after witnessing what he believes were Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents dressed in civilian clothes and ski masks making arrests.

"I looked outside and saw what seemed like several police officers. I didn’t know who they were or why they were there," the resident told us, describing a tense moment outside his Desert Hot Springs home. Despite calling authorities for clarification, he says he still hasn’t received a clear explanation for their visit or the identity of the agencies involved.

This resident’s experience is not isolated. Thousands across California and beyond have voiced similar concerns after videos surfaced online showing heavily armed men—some in masks and plain clothes—conducting arrests without clearly identifying themselves as ICE officers.

In a statement, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) responded, saying:

“ICE prioritizes the safety and security of its personnel,” citing a rise in assaults against officers. The agency says the use of masks and plain clothing is to protect the identities of highly trained agents during operations.

While no laws currently prohibit this practice, legal experts say its expansion under the Trump administration has added to public confusion and fear.

“This is not a criminal operation. These are civil matters. There's no reason for this level of secrecy or force,” said Alex Galvez, a well-known immigration attorney.

Galvez added that even in such situations, individuals have a legal right to ask for identification from any officer, regardless of what they’re wearing. Officers, by law, must present their credentials upon request.

The fear and distrust bred by these operations are having a ripple effect, especially in immigrant communities where people are already reluctant to engage with law enforcement. Advocates warn that this environment makes communities less safe for everyone.
