Texas Capitol Evacuated, Suspect Arrested After Lawmaker Threat
The Texas State Capitol was evacuated Saturday after what officials called a credible threat of violence against lawmakers.
The Texas Department of Public Safety later confirmed one person had been arrested in connection with the threat.
Details about the suspect and the exact nature of the threat have not yet been made public.
Democratic Representative Rhetta Bowers said the arrest brought some relief, but concerns still linger.
“It does make us feel a little bit safer,” Bowers said, “but there’s always the idea of copycat crimes.”
The threat came just days after two lawmakers were shot in Minnesota, raising national concern.
In response, DPS Chief Freeman Martin warned lawmakers that attacks like these can inspire others.
He reassured them in a memo that their safety remains the department’s top priority.
Governor Greg Abbott has been briefed and monitored the situation as the Capitol was temporarily shut down.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said the threat specifically mentioned plans to kill members of the legislature.
Despite the scare, Democratic lawmakers continued with planned protests, determined not to be silenced.
State Senator Sarah Eckhardt said, “This is how we get heard—and it’s important for our country.”
