Local Families Fearful on July 4th Amid ICE Detainments in Coachella Valley

Today marks Independence Day, but for some families in the Coachella Valley, it doesn’t feel like a celebration. Fear of immigration enforcement has kept many inside their homes, avoiding public gatherings and even traditional July 4th festivities.

Community leader Luz Gallegos, Executive Director of TODEC, says recent ICE operations have deeply shaken families in the region. “Agents are out here and five-year-olds already know what’s happening,” she said. “They’re not asking for fireworks—they just want their parents.”

An article from KNBC reported that several July 4th events in Los Angeles were postponed or canceled. Gallegos believes that, sadly, this fear-driven behavior may be part of a new reality. “The way we live our lives has changed,” she said. “Even with health fairs or other events, families aren’t coming out.”

One local mother said her family usually attends parades, but this year, they’re staying home. “Instead of having independence, we are oppressed,” she said. “We are stuck at home due to ICE being around our community.”

Even fireworks booths in the region are feeling the impact. One vendor in Coachella, raising funds to help Esqueda Musa's team attend a competition in Mexico, said foot traffic is way down. “Looking at the different booths, they’re not as busy as they’ve been in the past,” the vendor said. “We’re hopeful, but it’s slower than usual.”

Sylvia, a local resident, echoed the desire for change. “I would like to have an amnesty,” she said. “Every president promises a path to citizenship, but nothing happens—we stay forgotten.”
