Dog Stolen in Carjacking Reunited with Owner Thanks to Good Samaritans in Kansas City
What started as a routine stop at a gas station turned into a nightmare for Alex Bell when someone jumped into his car and drove off — with his dog Bear still inside.
“I would take this five times over just to make sure he was safe,” said Bell, who was left battered and bruised after trying to hold onto the car’s door handle and being dragged across the parking lot.
Bell had left his car running with the air conditioning on while filling the tires. In a moment of distraction, the thief took off with his car — and his loyal companion. “He means a lot to me and my family,” Bell said.
Overcome with emotion, Bell turned to social media to help find Bear. The post quickly went viral, with more than a thousand shares.
Miraculously, the next morning, Bear was found nearly 20 miles away in Hyde Park by three strangers — the Zahl family and Nicole Nudelman — who happened to be out getting donuts.
“It was one of those golden rule moments,” said Rob Zahl. The family had recently moved to Kansas City after losing their own dog, Rex. “I felt the same emotions stir up and I just wanted to help.”
The Good Samaritans saw Bear and remembered a unique detail from the viral post — the phrase “Where’s Grandma?” When they said it aloud, Bear’s ears perked up, confirming it was him.
“The stars aligned perfectly,” said Nudelman.
Police have since located Bell’s vehicle, but for him, it’s Bear that matters most. “I can get another car, but I can’t get another Bear.”
Thanks to the compassion of strangers, a stolen moment turned into an unforgettable reunion and a reminder of the kindness still found in communities.
