Ghislaine Maxwell Meets with DOJ Amid Questions About Epstein Files
In a highly unusual move, the U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly turning to Ghislaine Maxwell for answers about the mysterious and much-speculated Epstein files. Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year federal sentence for her role in Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking operation, met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche this week at a federal courthouse in Tallahassee, Florida.
Blanche, who previously served as a criminal defense attorney for President Donald Trump, is now the second-highest-ranking official in the Justice Department. Legal experts say it’s extremely rare for someone in such a senior position to meet with an incarcerated individual.
Maxwell was convicted of grooming and helping Epstein sexually abuse underage girls over the course of several years. Following Epstein’s death in jail in 2019 — ruled a suicide — Maxwell remains one of the few people who could fully expose the scope of Epstein’s crimes and connections.
In May, Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly briefed Trump that his name appeared in the so-called Epstein files — a claim Trump denies. Though once close to Epstein, Trump has not been charged with any wrongdoing related to the case.
The motive behind the DOJ's outreach to Maxwell remains unclear. Some speculate a possible deal could be on the table — though experts are skeptical.
“There's no way you could ever believe Maxwell,” one legal analyst told CNN. “She knows the only way she’ll ever see the light of day is with a pardon.”
Any agreement would require full cooperation and disclosure, something Maxwell has yet to show a willingness to offer.
