California Governor Race Heats Up As Xavier Becerra And Chad Bianco Step Forward After Harris Exit
Big changes are unfolding in California’s race for governor following Kamala Harris’s announcement that she will not enter the 2026 contest. Her decision has opened the door for two prominent figures from opposing parties to emerge as early front-runners.
On the Democratic side, Xavier Becerra has quickly stepped into the spotlight. Becerra, the nation’s first Latino U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and a former California Attorney General, emphasized his commitment to making opportunities more accessible for working families. He has signaled a willingness to work across party lines, noting that during his tenure he collaborated with federal agencies on law enforcement matters while simultaneously taking legal action against them over policy disagreements.
Meanwhile, Republican Chad Bianco, Riverside County’s sheriff, is also campaigning for the position. Bianco describes himself as a leader focused on community priorities rather than party politics or special interests. He advocates for stronger support for law enforcement, improvements in infrastructure, expanded investment in basic education, and reducing obstacles for small business owners. Bianco points to his history of bipartisan work within Riverside County as a model for how he plans to lead the state.
Both candidates recognize that California’s political divisions present challenges but insist that collaboration is key to addressing the state’s pressing issues.
The primary election for governor will take place in June 2026, followed by the general election in November. The race is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years as voters begin to weigh their choices for California’s top office.
