Know Before You Go: Major Construction Projects Impact Coachella Valley Traffic

Road construction activity continues at a heightened pace across the Coachella Valley this summer, prompting drivers to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time. Kris Gunterson, Program Manager for the Coachella Valley Association of Government's CV Sync Traffic Management program, outlined several major projects impacting local traffic this week.

Highway 111 La Quinta Pavement Restoration

The largest ongoing project spans Highway 111 through La Quinta, running from Plaza La Quinta on the west to Jefferson Street. Construction crews are currently working on inside lanes, leaving only one lane open in each direction. The torn-up pavement is being prepared for compacting and repaving before work shifts to outside lanes.

Recommended detours:

  • Fred Waring Drive (preferred route with extended signal timing)

  • Miles Avenue

Indian Wells Construction Zone

A six-week project in Indian Wells is adding an extended right turn lane for a church south of Fred Waring, while also improving the turning radius at Washington and Miles. The work includes eventual repaving of Miles Avenue, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction.

The project creates additional complexity as Miles Avenue serves as a detour route for the Fred Waring project, though crews are working extended hours to complete work ahead of schedule.

Alternate routes:

  • Cook Street

  • Jefferson Street

Cook Street Water District Work

The Coachella Valley Water District is conducting utility work on Cook Street north of the Wash, extending from Palm Desert High School up to Country Club Drive. The project involves multiple lane changes with traffic control, requiring extreme caution for left turns and side street access.

Recommended alternate:

  • Portola Avenue

Traffic Management and Safety

CVAG is extending signal timing on Fred Waring and Miles Avenue to accommodate increased traffic from construction detours. Officials emphasize the importance of maintaining speed limits rather than accelerating when traffic moves, as speeding disrupts signal coordination and creates stop-and-go conditions.

Traffic officials report increased incidents of red-light running this summer, contributing to intersection accidents. Drivers are urged to avoid attempting to clear intersections on stale yellow lights.
