Cathedral City Police Address Mental Health Response After Officer Stabbing

The Cathedral City Police Department is highlighting its efforts to prepare for mental health emergencies following a violent summer incident that left one of its officers injured.

In July, officers responded to a family disturbance call at a residence. When the first officer arrived, the suspect opened the door and immediately attacked him with a knife. The officer was able to subdue the suspect until backup arrived, and the man was taken into custody.

While investigators are still determining whether the attack was linked to a mental health crisis, police officials say they are working closely with the community and have resources in place for such situations.

“When a family member or someone in the community is having a mental episode, our process is always the same,” a Cathedral City police spokesperson explained. “We try to talk to them first, ask if they’re on medication or missing medication, and gather as much history as they’re willing to share. We’re here to help this individual, not go against them.”

Officers acknowledge that the signs of a mental health crisis are not always easy to identify. In some cases, individuals may openly describe hearing voices or experiencing distress, while in others the symptoms may be hidden.

Police emphasize that their approach is centered on service, safety, and connecting individuals with the right care. They also encourage community members to seek out resources for loved ones who may be struggling with mental health challenges.
