College of the Desert Baseball Coach Reunites with Colombian Player After 8 Years
College of the Desert baseball coach Sam Dimattio has experienced a rare full-circle moment, reuniting with Colombian player Juan Alvarez, whom he first met eight years ago during a youth baseball clinic in Colombia. At the time, Juan was just 10 years old, learning the game under Coach Dimattio's guidance. “I remember he even gifted us baseball cleats, which I used until I was 16 years old,” said Juan, reflecting on the life lessons and encouragement he received. Dimattio recalled Juan’s determination and later recognized him immediately when reviewing recruitment footage sent by Patrick Powers, who works with Colombian baseball programs. What began as a gesture of kindness has evolved into something extraordinary, with Juan now excelling as a key member of the College of the Desert baseball team. Dimattio’s roster reflects his broad scouting approach, featuring athletes from the Coachella Valley and international players from countries like Mexico, Canada, Italy, and Colombia. But this reunion is especially meaningful. "To have him here now feels like fate," Dimattio said. Juan is equally grateful, calling the reunion proof that “everything happens for a reason.” Together, they are writing a new chapter in the College of the Desert’s rich sports history.
