Egg Prices Surge for Thanksgiving, Impacting Shoppers and Businesses

As the holiday season approaches, Thanksgiving shoppers are noticing a significant price increase in eggs. The cost of a dozen eggs has risen sharply, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting an increase from $2.07 in October 2023 to $3.37 in October 2024. For some consumers, the price has even surpassed $5 per dozen, with the most expensive dozen ranging from $5 to $7.29 at various stores. This price surge is attributed to a combination of factors, including increased holiday demand and the ongoing impact of avian flu, which has affected the egg supply. Despite the higher costs, many consumers, including those running small businesses like Best Regards Bakery & Café in Overland Park, are choosing to maintain the quality of their products by continuing to use real eggs, rather than turning to substitutes. The bakery's co-owner, Robertson, shared that while the cost of eggs has increased, he remains committed to using fresh eggs for his baked goods, even though a case of eggs now costs around $75, up from the usual $17 to $18. As holiday baking ramps up, shoppers and businesses alike are adjusting to the increased costs without compromising on quality.
