The TikTokification of Skincare
Social media platforms like TikTok are influencing teenagers to buy anti-aging skincare products that health experts say could harm their skin. The trend is sparking concerns among parents, doctors, and even state officials, as these products are increasingly marketed to underage consumers.
Dr. Andrew Carlson of Connecticut Children’s Hospital warns that these products—often containing ingredients like retinol or salicylic acid—can lead to severe skin issues in teens, including dryness, redness, worsening eczema, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. “Children’s skin is naturally healthy and doesn’t require these types of products,” Carlson explained.
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has also criticized retailers like Sephora for showcasing products intended for adults in search results for kids’ skincare. He argues that the marketing and packaging appeal to teens, convincing them these items are essential for being "cool" or fitting in.
Social media plays a significant role in this trend. TikTok users often promote skincare routines and products as essential must-haves, with some influencers earning commissions for their endorsements. However, many teens and parents are unaware of the health risks posed by these recommendations.
Experts urge parents to educate themselves on what their children are watching online and to be cautious when buying skincare products as holiday gifts. Carlson advises avoiding ingredients like retinol for anyone under 20, as well as scrutinizing labels for other potentially harmful substances.
“This holiday season, spend wisely,” Carlson urged. “Your child’s skin is much healthier than you realize—it doesn’t need unnecessary products.”
The warning highlights the growing influence of social media on consumer habits and the need for greater awareness about safe skincare practices for young people.
