CHP Launches Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement: Safety First on Blackout Wednesday

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced its annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), running from 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, December 1. With 80% of CHP officers statewide on patrol, the initiative aims to curb impaired driving, expedite response times, and ensure seatbelt compliance during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Thanksgiving Eve, often called “Blackout Wednesday,” has become notorious for excessive drinking, making DUI enforcement a top priority. CHP’s impaired driver task force will be active throughout the weekend. Last year’s Thanksgiving MEP resulted in 1,047 DUI arrests statewide, with 210 in Los Angeles County alone. Tragically, 27 fatal crashes were recorded, five of which involved unbuckled passengers. “Safety and security on the road are paramount, especially during the holidays,” said CHP Sergeant Dan Kane. “It’s vital to designate a sober driver and wear your seatbelt. Everyone wants to see their loved ones at the next holiday gathering.” The National Institute of Health reminds drivers that moderate drinking is defined as one drink for women and two for men. However, CHP officials caution against relying on these guidelines, urging drivers to plan ahead and avoid alcohol altogether if driving. CHP’s message is clear: Don’t drink and drive.
