President Biden Pardons Son Hunter in Surprise Move, Sparks Political Debate
In a dramatic reversal, President Joe Biden has granted a sweeping pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, sparking intense political controversy. The full and unconditional pardon covers offenses Hunter Biden was charged with or may have committed over the past 11 years, including federal gun charges and tax evasion. The decision came just weeks before Hunter Biden’s sentencing hearings and represents a significant shift from the president's previous stance. White House aides had consistently denied the possibility of a pardon, even after the 2024 election. However, during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in Nantucket, President Biden changed course, citing what he described as undue scrutiny and political targeting of his son. "Enough is enough," the president wrote in a statement. "In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me." Hunter Biden expressed gratitude for the clemency, stating, "I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted." The pardon has drawn sharp criticism from Republicans and some Democrats alike. Senator Tom Cotton noted that while Americans might sympathize with a father’s choice to protect his son, the dishonesty surrounding the decision was inexcusable. Colorado Governor Jared Polis also expressed disappointment, stating, "I am disappointed that put his family ahead of his country." The decision has reignited debates about fairness, accountability, and political motivations as the president faces renewed scrutiny.
