World AIDS Day 2024: Reflecting on the Past and Celebrating Progress in the Desert in the Fight Against HIV

Since 1988, December 1st has been recognized as World AIDS Day, a day to unite globally in solidarity against HIV and to honor those who have been affected by the epidemic. Despite the progress made, the battle is far from over. In 2022, there were over 1.3 million new HIV diagnoses and more than 40 million deaths globally. The Coachella Valley, like many other communities, continues to reflect on the lasting impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Local health professionals recall the early years of the epidemic when treatments were limited and lives were lost at an alarming rate. "We were just trying to help, with little knowledge on how to treat HIV itself," said a frontline worker. But over time, their efforts and resilience have transformed the landscape of HIV care. Advances in medicine have made living with HIV manageable, and there’s now hope where there was once despair. This year, Art Plus in Palm Springs celebrates the creativity of HIV-positive artists in an exhibition, in partnership with the HIV Aging Research Project (HARP). The exhibit runs from December 4th to 28th, with events designed to engage the community in supporting those affected by HIV through volunteering, donations, and creativity. The launch event on December 4th and artist meet-ups on the 14th and 21st offer a chance to connect and reflect.
