Cleared of Fraud: Teacher Union President Speaks Out on Political Targeting

Carissa Carrera, a single mother and teacher union president, has been cleared of fraud charges after being accused in a politically charged case involving the Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD). Carrera's ordeal began in January 2023 when allegations surfaced suggesting she had misappropriated school funds related to health care issues. However, the district waited until October—just before a crucial school board election—to act on these claims. A private investigator, hired by the district, reportedly spurred the accusations, which Carrera believes were politically motivated. As union president, she had openly opposed the reelection campaigns of certain board members, including Jesus Gonzalez, and participated in efforts such as billboard campaigns urging voters against their support. In an unusual move, the district released a statement about Carrera's administrative leave—a rarity for personnel matters—further fueling public scrutiny. Despite these challenges, the Sheriff’s Department concluded its investigation with no findings, formally clearing Carrera of any wrongdoing. "I’ve been through an incredible nightmare," Carrera shared. "Seeing my picture on the news, being accused of fraud—it was a lot to bear." Carrera has yet to receive any communication from the district regarding her status, even though they were notified of the investigation’s closure. She remains on administrative leave and cannot access school properties. This case has raised concerns about the district's transparency and potential misuse of resources for political purposes. Carrera’s experience highlights broader issues within CVUSD and may pave the way for further investigations. With the allegations behind her, Carrera is looking forward to a peaceful holiday season with her son. However, she believes this is just the beginning of exposing systemic issues within the district. “We’ve only scratched the surface,” she said.
