Fast-Moving Wildfire Forces Malibu Evacuations Amid High Winds

A fast-moving wildfire in Malibu, named the Franklin Fire, has rapidly consumed over 2,700 acres and forced the evacuation of approximately 6,000 residents and 2,000 structures. Southern California remains under red flag warnings as extreme Santa Ana winds intensify fire activity, propelling flames from the coastline into mountainous canyons. The fire erupted overnight, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph, scattering embers and igniting new blazes across roads and hillsides. Residents had little time to escape the inferno, with flames engulfing homes and causing widespread destruction. Alec Galis, a resident in the area, described the harrowing scene: “Fires are everywhere – in the mountains, the canyons, and even near homes.” Pepperdine University experienced tense moments as nearly 800 students sheltered in place while the fire approached the campus library. Aerial firefighting efforts played a crucial role in saving homes and lives, although the intense smoke and wind posed significant challenges. Linda Michelle, a local resident, managed to save her horses and other property despite losing her guest house. “The smoke and embers were overwhelming, but we’re relieved to see parts of our property still standing,” she said. With the fire still burning out of control, emergency crews are working tirelessly to contain the flames. Officials urge residents to heed evacuation orders as conditions remain volatile.
