Drone Swarms Spark Concerns in Northeast

Mysterious Drones Shut Down New York Airport; New Jersey on High Alert Unexplained drone activity forced New York Stewart International Airport, located 60 miles north of New York City, to shut down runways for an hour last night. The incident comes as New Jersey and other states report a rise in mysterious flying objects. Videos of unidentified aircraft have surfaced in recent days across Virginia, Maryland, and California. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called on Congress and the Biden administration to take action, declaring, "This has gone too far." Federal officials, however, maintain that these drones pose no public threat. An FBI official revealed that out of approximately 5,000 reports nationwide, fewer than 100 required investigation, with most identified as recreational drones or fixed-wing aircraft. To address concerns, upgraded detection technology is being deployed in New Jersey. Congressman Chris Smith expressed frustration, stating, “For weeks, we've asked for the truth and action to mitigate any and all threats. Now we are demanding it.” In Seaside Heights, Ocean County Sheriff's Department Detective Anthony D’Amico conducted surveillance using a thermal camera-equipped drone. Within minutes, he detected several fast-moving objects in the sky. “Once we find out where they’re coming from or where they’re going, we’ll have a better idea of who’s responsible,” D’Amico said. Residents are equally frustrated. Local beachgoers explained how they identify potential drones: by observing hovering or erratic movements and ruling out planes by listening for jet engines. Despite federal assurances, the lack of clarity leaves many uneasy. An FBI spokesperson confirmed there is no evidence linking New Jersey sightings to incidents elsewhere. Whether these objects are pranks, foreign adversaries, or military operations remains unclear, but with growing concerns, officials and residents alike are demanding answers.
