Prevent Costly Clogs: Tips for Proper Disposal of Fats, Oils, and Grease

Avoid Costly Repairs: Stop FOGs from Clogging Your Pipes This Water Wise Wednesday, Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) reminds residents about the dangers of improperly disposing of fats, oils, and grease (FOGs). These substances, including cooking oil, bacon grease, and pan drippings, can cool and solidify in pipes, causing major clogs. “When FOGs mix with items like wipes, paper towels, or other trash, they form fatbergs—massive clogs that can back up sewer systems and damage home plumbing,” says Lorraine Garcia of CVWD. The cost of these blockages can be significant, both to homeowners and the community. To prevent clogs, CVWD recommends: Scraping grease into the trash after it cools. Wiping pans before washing. Using strainers to catch food waste. These small actions protect your home’s plumbing and ensure the community’s water systems remain clear.
