Billboard also recognized Beyoncé as the greatest pop star of the 21st century. Ariana Grande also had a stellar year with a number-one album (Eternal Sunshine), two chart-topping singles ("Yes" and "We Can't Be Friends"), and the lead role in the highly anticipated box-office hit Wicked. Hollywood Highlights Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer reigned supreme at the Oscars, winning seven awards, including Best Picture. At the Golden Globes, Lily Gladstone made history as the first Indigenous person to win Best Actress for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. The Emmy Awards experienced an unusual year with two ceremonies. The 2023 awards, delayed due to industry strikes, took place in January, followed by the 2024 Emmys in their usual September slot. Disney sequels dominated the box office with Inside Out 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine both earning over $600 million domestically. Moana 2 also set a Thanksgiving weekend record. Legal Dramas Sean "Diddy" Combs faced serious legal troubles, including charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. He remains in custody after being denied bail multiple times and has pleaded not guilty, with his trial set for May 2025. In contrast, Alec Baldwin received favorable legal news as a judge dismissed his involuntary manslaughter charge related to the 2021 death of Rust cinematographer Helena Hutchins. Harvey Weinstein’s legal battles continued with new charges and health-related delays in his upcoming trials. Celebrity Breakups In August, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, known as "Bennifer 2.0," ended their marriage just two years after tying the knot, closing a chapter that began with their first engagement more than two decades ago. From record-breaking achievements to ongoing legal battles, 2024 will be remembered as a year of dramatic twists and turns in the entertainment world.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
