Suspect in Manhattan Killing of United Health Executive Pleads Not Guilty to Murder Charges
Luigi Mangione, the man accused of gunning down United Health executive Brian Thompson in a pre-dawn shooting on December 4th, pleaded not guilty to state murder charges during an arraignment at a New York courthouse today. The 26-year-old is facing 11 counts in the indictment, which includes three murder charges, one of which is categorized as murder as an act of terrorism. If convicted on all charges, Mangione could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
This court appearance marks Mangione's second in New York since his arrest on December 9th at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The charges stem from the fatal shooting of Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel, where Thompson had been attending an investor conference with his company. The shooting occurred just hours before the conference was scheduled to begin.
In addition to the state charges, Mangione also faces a four-count federal criminal complaint accusing him of stalking and killing Thompson. He has not yet entered a plea on the federal charges. Outside the courthouse, a group of Mangione's supporters gathered, carrying signs and chanting in his favor. Some of these supporters resonate with Mangione's expressed disdain toward the health insurance industry and wealthy executives, sentiments he documented in a notebook.
As the case continues to unfold, Mangione remains in custody, with the potential for additional charges as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Thompson's death proceed.
