One of the year’s most heartwarming stories featured a beloved crossing guard who retired after nearly two decades of service, imparting wisdom to students: "The world belongs to you guys. Make a difference." That message echoed throughout the year in other stories of people paying it forward.
High school students honored a custodian by naming a gym and cafeteria after him, while others celebrated their dorm security guard’s birthday in a surprise show of gratitude. Teachers, often unsung heroes, were moved to tears by heartfelt letters from former students expressing appreciation for the safe and nurturing spaces they created.
The year also saw extraordinary achievements and moments of connection. UPDATE: The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that one person has died and another two were injured after a home explosion on Ocotillo Rd in Twentynine Palms. Security camera video from a nearby neighbor captured the dramatic blast around 8:28 p.m., followed by a fire that brought a massive emergency response from fire and law enforcement agencies across the Morongo Basin. The burning structure has been confirmed as a residence at 6427 Ocotillo Ave. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail team is conducting the investigation.
