2024: The Year in Entertainment – From Record-Breaking Tours to Courtroom Drama
2024 proved to be an unforgettable year in entertainment. From record-breaking musical tours to high-profile courtroom battles, the last 12 months kept Hollywood—and the world—on its toes. Let's take a look back at some of the most significant moments in entertainment this year.
Taylor Swift's Eras tour wrapped up in December, but its impact will be felt for years to come. The tour itself became a cultural phenomenon, shattering records and thrilling fans worldwide. Alongside her tour, Swift’s The Tortured Poet’s Department album made history, spending 15 consecutive weeks at #1 and becoming the first album in Spotify’s history to reach 300 million streams in a single day. It was a major achievement in Swift’s already stellar career.
Beyoncé surprised fans with the release of Cowboy Carter, her eighth studio album that made waves on both the country and pop charts. Not only did it top the Billboard 200, but it also made history as the first album by a Black woman to hit #1 on Billboard’s Country chart, marking a milestone in the music industry. Billboard recognized her as the greatest pop star of the 21st century, underscoring her continuing cultural dominance.
Ariana Grande had a remarkable year, scoring a #1 album, Eternal Sunshine, with hit singles like "Yes and" and "We Can't Be Friends." On the movie front, she starred in Wicked, which also reached the top spot at the box office, further solidifying her position as one of the entertainment industry's brightest stars.
2024 was a banner year for cinema, especially for Oppenheimer, which dominated the Oscars by winning 7 trophies, including the coveted Best Picture. Meanwhile, Lily Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes as the first Indigenous actress to win Best Actress, thanks to her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.
2024 saw the rare occurrence of two Emmy ceremonies. The 2023 Emmys, delayed by four months due to the writers and actors strikes, were held in January. In September, the 2024 Emmys returned to their usual spot, wrapping up a unique year in television awards.
Disney’s sequels continued to dominate the domestic box office, with Inside Out 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine each crossing the $600 million mark. Moana 2 also set a Thanksgiving weekend box-office record, proving that audiences continue to embrace beloved franchises.
While many entertainers were basking in their successes, 2024 was also a year of legal drama. Sean “Diddy” Combs faced serious charges in September, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. He was denied bail multiple times and is set to go to trial in May 2024. On a more positive legal note, Alec Baldwin saw his involuntary manslaughter charge in the 2021 Rust shooting incident dismissed, as a judge ruled in his favor.
Harvey Weinstein’s legal troubles also continued, as he pleaded not guilty to new charges, and an appeals court overturned his 2020 conviction. A new trial has been delayed due to his health issues.
In a sad turn for celebrity fans, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage ended in August. Lopez filed for the dissolution of their union, which lasted two years. This separation came nearly 22 years after their first engagement, closing the chapter on one of Hollywood’s most high-profile couples.
As we look back at 2024, it’s clear that the year in entertainment was full of highs and lows, from groundbreaking achievements in music and film to legal battles that captivated the public. With new faces rising to stardom and veterans continuing to leave their mark, the entertainment world promises even more surprises in the year to come.
