Deadly New Year’s Tragedy: Driver Plows Into Crowds in New Orleans
New Orleans rang in the New Year with devastating tragedy as a driver deliberately plowed into crowds of revelers in the city’s iconic French Quarter. Officials confirmed at least 10 fatalities and dozens of injuries following the early morning incident on Bourbon Street.

The suspect, who evaded police barricades before targeting the crowds, was killed during the incident, according to federal authorities. The FBI is leading the investigation and has classified the act as an act of terrorism.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the suspect’s actions as calculated and intentional.
"This individual was determined to cause maximum harm, as evidenced by his decision to go around barricades and create such carnage," Kirkpatrick stated.

The suspect also shot and injured two police officers before being stopped. This act of violence comes during one of the city’s busiest times, with thousands of visitors in town for New Year’s celebrations and the Sugar Bowl.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed deep sorrow for the victims and their families, urging the community to come together in this time of loss.
"Our city is in mourning. We ask for prayers for those who lost their lives and for their loved ones navigating this tragedy," she said.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the attack and has spoken with Mayor Cantrell to offer federal assistance.

Heightened security had been in place across New Orleans for the holiday festivities, but the intentional nature of this attack shocked officials and residents alike. The investigation remains ongoing as the city grapples with the aftermath of this senseless violence.
