Jerry's 2024 Weather Review for the Coachella Valley!

As we begin a new year, it's time to breakdown the last.
Of the 366 days of 2024, Palm Springs recorded...
‣ 226 Above Normal High Temperature Days
‣ 121 Below Normal High Temperature Days
‣ 19 Normal High Temperature Days
‣ 17 Record High temperature Days
• The month of July was exceptionally notable for the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs recorded 29-above normal high temperatures that month. Of those, 4 were record highs including a reading of 124° on July 5 which became the city's new all-time record high.
• July finished as the hottest month on record for Palm Springs. The average temperature was exactly 100.0-degrees, smashing the previous record of 98.5° set in July 2023. The average maximum temperature was also the highest on record at 114.9°, eclipsing the old July record of 113.6°, also in July 2023.
• Also during the month of July, a ridge of high pressure over the Four Corners area funneled lots of monsoonal moisture in the direction of Southern California. It brought thunderstorms and heavy precipitation to the mountains and deserts of Riverside County. In fact, Palm Desert was slammed with a record 1.34" of rain on the 14th which caused extensive flooding in the area.
• During the third-week of September, a cold core low pressure system -- which brought accumulating graupel and small hail to our mountains -- produced a few funnel clouds which were observed South of Rancho Mirage.
• October started out hot under a strong high-pressure ridge over California. A 117° reading on the first of the month in Palm Springs not only became a new heat pinnacle for the Coachella Valley, but the highest recorded temperature for the month of October in all of the United States.
