Southern California Weather Update: Above Normal Temps, Winds, and a Potential Rain Shift
We begin today’s weather update with a view from Agua Caliente Casino, where the skies are partly cloudy. Two levels of clouds are currently overhead—mid-level and high fair weather clouds—though they’re not bringing any rain to the surface. The region remains dry, with temperatures still trending above normal for the past few days. Yesterday, we saw a high of 76°F, well above the average 69°F. Today, we're expecting more of the same, with highs reaching into the mid-70s once again.
However, an air quality alert has been extended for the region through tonight, and it could last through Saturday. This is particularly important for areas along the west end of the valley and into the San Gorgonio Pass. A wood-burning ban is currently in effect to reduce particulate matter in the air, which can worsen air quality. Be mindful of this if you're planning to spend time outdoors in those areas.
Despite the cloud cover, there’s no rain in sight for Southern California right now. The radar is clear over the region, with any precipitation staying well to the north. Northern California is experiencing a system that’s moving into central California, bringing snow to the mountains and a few thunderstorms to the central part of the state. Thankfully, this system is not expected to bring any rain to Southern California.
Later today, we will see winds pick up slightly out of the west due to this northern system, but no wind advisories are in effect. Winds may get gusty at times, but overall, they won’t be too extreme. Palm Springs will see a high of 76°F, while Indio will reach 75°F. Expect overnight lows to dip into the 40s, but winds will help distribute temperatures evenly across the region.
For the weekend, temperatures will remain warm and slightly above normal. Saturday will see highs in the mid-70s, which is around 5 degrees above the typical average. By Sunday, temperatures may climb into the upper 70s, with mostly sunny skies and little to no chance of rain.
Looking ahead, early next week brings a potential shift in the weather. The GFS forecast has scaled back the expected rain, but a few sprinkles could be seen over Arizona and to the west of us. Southern California will likely remain dry, with strong northerly winds expected to be the main feature of the week. Tuesday and Wednesday will see sustained winds of around 30 mph around the San Gorgonio Pass and areas north of I-10, with gusts further south in the valley. These winds could be the main weather event next week, but it's still several days away, so the forecast may change.
Today and tomorrow: Highs in the mid-70s, with some clouds moving in and out of the area.
Sunday: A chance for upper 70s and mostly sunny skies.
Monday: 78°F in Palm Springs, with dry conditions continuing.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Strong north winds, with a slight chance of mountain showers.
Stay tuned for updates, as things could change with the approaching weather systems. For now, enjoy the warm and dry conditions!
