Nationwide Protests Mark 'A Day Without Immigrants' Against Trump’s Immigration Policies
On February 3, 2025, the "Day Without Immigrants" movement swept across the United States as thousands of activists and demonstrators took to the streets to protest President Trump's controversial immigration policies. The protests highlighted the vital role immigrants play in the nation's economy and society, as businesses closed their doors and individuals refrained from work and school to show solidarity with the cause.
The movement called on the immigrant community to participate in a nationwide day of action by abstaining from work, school, and other activities, in order to demonstrate the impact of their absence. Activists emphasized the importance of immigrants in various sectors, including agriculture, construction, and hospitality, and protested the characterization of immigrants as criminals.
In Los Angeles, the protest began with just a few dozen participants but quickly grew to thousands as demonstrators marched through downtown, waving Mexican and Central American flags. The group’s chants echoed throughout the streets, demanding recognition for the immigrant community’s contributions to the nation. Demonstrators were united by a sense of personal connection to the cause, with many sharing their experiences as children of immigrants or as immigrants themselves.
Maria Ramos, a participant from Gardena, spoke passionately about the personal nature of the protest. "My father migrated here when he was 17 years old. If he wouldn’t have done that, I wouldn’t be here," she said, standing with a sign that read, “I need my dad.” Ramos shared the fear her family faces as her father, a gardener, is at risk of deportation every day. "He's not a criminal, but he's a target," she added.
Throughout the day, the rally grew in size, with protesters marching for miles through downtown Los Angeles, eventually reaching the Main Street and Spring Street Bridges over the 101 Freeway. The protest continued to grow in both size and intensity, as demonstrators expressed their frustration with the government’s immigration policies and their determination to be heard.
"We stand together," said one protester, emphasizing the unity of the Latino community in Los Angeles. "Our culture, our history—they try to erase it, but we remember where we're from, and we stand together."
The demonstrations were not without conflict, as standoffs between protesters and police erupted in several cities. In Los Angeles, nearly 200 individuals were arrested as police cleared the protest on the 101 Freeway. However, the message from the protesters remained clear: they are fighting for their rights and for the rights of their families.
As the "Day Without Immigrants" protests continue to resonate across the nation, it serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role immigrants play in shaping the fabric of American society. The protests also underscore the growing frustration with the current administration's immigration policies and the challenges faced by immigrant communities who fear for their future in the United States.
The movement's call for a national day of action brought people from all walks of life together, with many rallying to support the immigrant community’s fight for equality, fairness, and recognition. As the protests continue, the question remains: how will the administration respond to the voices of millions demanding justice for immigrants across the country?
