Bat-Eared Fox Escapes at The Living Desert, Zoo Conducting Active Search

PALM DESERT – The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is on high alert after a clever female bat-eared fox escaped from a behind-the-scenes holding facility on the evening of February 10, 2025. The fox was last seen around 9:30 p.m., and zoo staff have been actively searching for her ever since.

Bat-eared foxes are small, weighing about 10 pounds, and are not harmful to humans. They primarily eat insects and can be identified by their large ears, gray fur on their belly, and darker fur on their feet, ears, and tail tip. Zoo officials believe the fox remains on the premises, likely foraging in the gardens.

Guests and nearby residents are being asked to be on the lookout but not to approach the animal if spotted. Instead, The Living Desert requests that sightings be reported immediately by calling 760-346-5694, pressing 0 to speak with a zoo representative, and providing the exact location of the sighting.

The zoo’s animal care team remains optimistic about safely recovering the fox and is continuing efforts to locate her. Updates will be provided as the search continues.
