Egg Prices Soar to Record Highs Amid Nationwide Shortage

Egg prices have skyrocketed across the U.S., leaving consumers frustrated as they struggle to find affordable options. In just two months, the price of a dozen eggs jumped 14%, reaching an average of $7.34 by February 7, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Some shoppers are seeing prices much higher, with reports of cartons costing up to $18.

The surge is linked to the highly contagious avian flu, which has devastated poultry farms, leading to the deaths of 130 million birds since 2022. With fewer hens producing eggs, supply is tight, and retailers like Trader Joe’s and Costco have started limiting egg purchases. Even small farms, like Hilliker Ranch in California, are capping sales to ensure enough supply for all customers.

The crisis has even led to egg thefts. In Pennsylvania, thieves stole 100,000 eggs from a distribution trailer, while a Seattle café recently had hundreds of eggs stolen.

Unfortunately, relief isn’t coming soon. The USDA warns prices could rise another 20% this year, making eggs an increasingly expensive staple for American households.
